Agricultural setup
Combolands agriculture: build a berry-to-Windmill engine
On a berry-friendly map, start with Picker’s Hut + irrigation. For the Windmill extension, match its affected category to the transformations you produce—players use Ghost Paint to Nature. Verify one payout before scaling. Do not wait for a Gardener or assume irrigation makes every crop trigger weekly.

Start with the berries already on your island
Agricultural runs are map-sensitive. In the full-release Steam discussion, x_equals_speed and KogasaGaSagasa both describe berry-based openings; they also warn that the arrangement of berries and flowers can make another plan more practical. The advice here is a route to recognize, not a fixed deck or guaranteed win.
- Find a usable berry cluster. Check which targets a Picker’s Hut can actually cover. Keep space for an irrigation building instead of filling every neighboring tile.
- Place the Picker’s Hut for an immediate job. Prefer a useful opening over reserving your whole board for a rare late card.
- Add a Well when available. With Civic as your second Guild, look for a Fountain as another reported irrigation route. Use the live preview to check coverage; their footprints need not be identical.
- Watch a berry transformation and the score. Confirm which card reacts. If the trigger does not happen, fix that link before buying more pieces.
- Scale the working route. Add a compatible Windmill or another payoff once the opening is carrying the current milestone.
Read range versus adjacency before assuming a nearby card is covered. A crowded irrigation layout can also conflict with an Outpost’s neighbor requirements.

Connect the Windmill to the event you actually produce
The tempting mistake is placing a Windmill beside berries and expecting proximity alone to create a combo. KogasaGaSagasa describes its unpainted transformation targets as Residence and Training. A separate September 2–3 test by NCDarkness reports that Ghost Paint changes the first of those two affected categories, not both.
- Read the Windmill’s current transformation condition.
- If your engine produces Nature transformations, consider Ghost Paint to Nature when that category is available on the map.
- Read the card again: check which affected category changed and which stayed.
- Place the intended transforming targets within the effect’s actual coverage.
- Watch one cycle. Only add score boosts after the Windmill really pays out.
This explains the player-reported Picker → irrigated berry transformation → painted Windmill payoff. It is an interaction sequence, not a tile diagram or a promise of a fixed number of triggers. For other paint examples, use the Ghost Paint compatibility table.
Choose the next piece by what the loop is missing
| You have | Look for | Why / limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Berries and Picker’s Hut | Well, or Civic Fountain | Players use irrigation to support transformation events. Check the actual coverage. |
| Transformations, no Windmill response | Compatible target category, possibly Ghost Paint | Nature is not the Windmill’s reported original target category. |
| Working Windmill payout | Score modifiers that cover it | Improve the scorer already firing, rather than a card that never triggers. |
| Agricultural + Commercial offers | Brewery and compatible transformation pieces | Players report repeat-trigger routes; do not assume every Brewery activation or offer is guaranteed. |
| Later Gardener offer | A useful eligible target and a way to trigger it | Ravalion reports copying berries or Apiaries and retaining paint on copies. This is a later extension, not a required opening. |
Fix these traps before spending another week
- Two Huts overlap, but nothing improves: inspect the actual target/event and compare one cycle. The sources do not provide a universal stacking rule; an extra Hut needs a demonstrated job.
- Irrigated Sunflower does not score every week: dp101 explicitly tested and corrected that claim. Faster initial growth is not automatically a faster grown-field trigger cycle.
- Granary reset happened only once: Robrecht distinguishes its placement reset from repeated activation by another compatible trigger. A one-time placement is not a perpetual reset engine.
- The entire plan needs a Gardener you never draw: keep the berry opening productive without it. x_equals_speed warns against relying on Gardener for the first age.
- The map or offers do not cooperate: pivot to your other Guild’s working scorer. A supposed perfect farm is not worth missing the milestone deadline.
For the broader scoring diagnosis, read scorers, multipliers and trigger chains. For choosing the partner Guild, see combinations by run goal.
Agricultural setup questions
How do I start an Agricultural run in Combolands?
On a berry-friendly island, start with a Picker’s Hut and connect irrigation when offered. Players report Wells or Civic Fountains as useful partners. Get that opening scoring before waiting for a Windmill, paint or Gardener.
Why does my Windmill not react to berry bushes?
Player tests describe the Windmill’s original affected categories as Residence and Training, not Nature. Ghost Paint can connect its first affected category to Nature. Read the changed card and check its range before expecting berry transformations to trigger it.
Does irrigation make a Sunflower Field trigger every week?
Do not assume so. A player who tried the setup several times reports that irrigation accelerates initial growth, but the grown Sunflower’s trigger still follows its own cycle. Other claims in the same discussion conflict with that test.
Should I stack overlapping Picker’s Huts?
Do not spend more weeks just because two coverage areas overlap. First watch one berry and one scoring cycle, then add a second Hut only if its live effect adds a useful transformation or covers another needed target. The cited reports do not establish a universal overlap multiplier.
