Pick by the engine your run can actually build
| Your goal | Pair to try | What to look for | Change course if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repeatable scoring and rerolls | Civic + Commercial | Plot, Tax Collector, Brewery and Mason interactions; one player also builds around a painted Fountain. | The run never offers the trigger or transformation pieces. |
| Create-and-remove resource loop | Martial + Industrial | Resource generation, removal payoffs and room for new resources to appear. | Your map is crowded before the engine produces a reliable score. |
| Use a fishing-area setup | Martial + Maritime | A player reports Warehouse, Ballista, Guard Tower and Stable near fishing infrastructure. | You cannot obtain the pieces or place them together. |
| Scale a natural map | Agricultural + Frontier | A player reports Shaman huts and husbandry around a favorable map. | The offered terrain or buildings do not support that layout. |
Civic + Commercial: build around repeated triggers
Two players in the Guild-combo discussion favor this pair. DeRosseVanK3 describes Plot, Tax Collector and Brewery effects feeding repeated Mason triggers. bms42 suggests a Fountain surrounded by Plots, then Tax Collectors and Kitchens, with paint and additional trigger pieces when offered. Treat these as build sketches: they show what to search for in a run, not a promised point total.
Martial + Industrial: reward resource turnover
natecunning in the same discussion likes creating and destroying resources with Martial + Industrial, including Guard Tower payoffs. The related Frontier + Industrial Lumberjacks route shows why keeping empty space near resource-producing buildings matters. Choose this pair when your early offers already give you both sides of the loop, rather than picking it because of a generic tier label.
Martial + Maritime: a conditional fishing route
CrunchyChewie reports winning with Warehouse, Ballista, Guard Tower and Stable near fishing infrastructure. That is a useful placement target if those cards and the right coastline appear. It is one firsthand report, so do not read it as a guaranteed result on every map. For Warehouse trigger troubleshooting, use the Warehouse guide.
What the disagreement tells you
Agricultural + Civic on a berry-friendly map: KogasaGaSagasa and Calavontis recommend Fountain-supported openings in the Agricultural discussion. Start from Picker’s Hut and available berries, rather than waiting for a rare Gardener. The Agricultural opening guide walks through irrigation, a painted Windmill extension and the Sunflower timing trap. It is a conditional route, not a universal best pair.
Players in the Lumberjacks discussion disagree sharply about Frontier + Industrial: some fail before week four, while others describe winning routes. The same disagreement appears around Frontier and Agricultural builds elsewhere. A good pick therefore depends on the current map, unlocks and opening offers. If the planned payoff is still missing after the early milestones, protect the score you can already make rather than continuing to chase a perfect combo.
