Combolands Kelp Field and Seaweed Farm: give each one a job

Updated Oct 1, 2026 · Player-reported setup

The short answer

Use Kelp to fill useful empty spots around a Fishing Boat. The cited players do not describe a direct Kelp Field–Seaweed Farm combo. Seaweed Farm is a separate piece; Sryzon’s repeat-trigger route is Trawler → Fish Trap → Boat or Farm. Place for that actual job instead of the similar names.

Similar names, different jobs

hydendsneak asked why Kelp Fields and Seaweed Farms seemed as though they should work together during a Maritime + Frontier run. Sryzon’s reply separates them: Kelp fills gaps around Fishing Boats; Seaweed Farm can occupy a remote area without that direct pairing. palvet independently recommends Kelp for empty fishing spots.

Place Kelp for the Boat, not for the Farm

  1. Choose the Fishing Boat you want to improve. Read its scoring condition and inspect its affected area.
  2. Look for useful empty spots in that area. The cited players use Kelp where Fish are absent; a distant field is not automatically useful to this Boat.
  3. Compare the placement preview. Add the field for the Boat’s job, not for an assumed Seaweed Farm bonus.
  4. Observe the Boat’s next relevant payout. Distinguish a placement preview from the effect actually firing.
  5. Scale only the connection that works. Keep space for Fish Trap coverage or another support piece rather than filling every ocean tile first.

This official island image shows the space constraint, not a measured Kelp/Boat layout. The live coverage preview determines which tiles in your own map qualify. Read range versus adjacency if those relationships are unclear.

Add a trigger chain once the target has a job

Trawler → Fish Trap → Fishing Boat / Seaweed Farm is the sequence Sryzon describes. Start with the final scorer and work backward: can the Trap reach it, and can the Trawler activate the Trap? Test those two links separately. A large network with one disconnected link still does not deliver the intended payout.

For a Maritime + Frontier alternative, Sryzon reports Ghost Painting the Fish Trap’s affected tag from Fishing to Frontier so the Trap can activate suitable Frontier targets. This is a conditional extension, not required for the Kelp/Boat opening. Read the changed card before building around it; the Ghost Paint guide explains why matching the actual changed category matters.

The same reply mentions Herb Garden + Herbalist and Groves as another Frontier route, plus a Witch’s Hut / Ocean Shrine / Kelp pairing. It does not fully explain that last chain, so this page does not turn the named pieces into a guaranteed recipe.

If the Maritime setup still feels weak

  • Kelp beside a Farm, no improvement: move the decision back to the Boat’s actual scoring condition. The source specifically rejects the assumed direct Farm pairing.
  • A Boat works, but the extra trigger does not: check both links of the Trawler/Trap chain, not just the presence of all three cards.
  • Early Seaweed points are useful, later scaling is poor: palvet describes that preference. Keep a Farm only if its current payout or repeated trigger has a role in your run.
  • A multiplier rises without points: use the scorer versus multiplier checklist before buying more support.
  • A copied or painted version behaves differently: treat the changed card as its own case. This thread does not establish every modified interaction.

No fixed trigger cap, removal-Gold amount or optimal tile diagram is claimed here. Those require card-specific evidence rather than extrapolating from a short strategy reply.

Kelp and Seaweed questions

Do Kelp Fields and Seaweed Farms have a direct synergy in Combolands?

Sryzon’s September player reply explicitly says there is no direct synergy between those two pieces. Their suggested Kelp role is filling empty areas around Fishing Boats, while Seaweed Farms can be placed elsewhere. Do not infer a combo just because both names sound like seaweed.

Where should I place a Kelp Field?

Sryzon and palvet recommend filling usable empty spots around Fishing Boats where Fish are absent. Inspect the boat’s effect and coverage, compare its preview and watch the resulting score before committing more fields.

What triggers Fishing Boats and Seaweed Farms?

Sryzon describes a Trawler triggering Fish Traps, which can trigger Fishing Boats and Seaweed Farms. That is an attributed Maritime route; it is not a universal trigger count or proof that every nearby placement connects.

Are Seaweed Farms always bad?

No universal tier judgment follows from the thread. palvet prefers them for early points rather than as a main engine, while Sryzon describes triggering them with Fish Traps. Choose them for a specific scoring or trigger job, not the expectation that a Kelp Field automatically buffs them.
