Saving your run

Combolands save and Continue: why a run can roll back

Updated Sep 28, 2026 · Full-release player reports

The short answer

Players describe milestone checkpoints, not saving every week. Quitting midway can return you to that milestone’s first week. A missing Continue button or losing several completed stages is a different reported issue. The practical stopping point they recommend is after leaving the shop for the next milestone; read your current exit warning.

A milestone checkpoint is not a save of every placement

In the full-release saving discussion, dontnormally explains that saving happens at the beginning of a milestone after leaving the shop. TruthinessInc separately describes leaving during a milestone and returning to the beginning of that milestone.

That explains one common surprise: your unlocked run can still exist, but the placements made since its checkpoint are gone. It does not explain every lost-save report. The same thread contains reports of a missing Continue option and returning from Metropolis IV to Metropolis I.

The image is a dated interface example, not proof of a saved checkpoint. Use the stage name and week counter in your own run to distinguish where you quit from where Continue puts you.

Before stopping a long run

  1. Finish the milestone if practical. If you stop partway through it, expect that its later placements may not be retained under the reported checkpoint behavior.
  2. Leave the shop and enter the next milestone. That is the stopping point described by the player reply—not simply opening a shop or meeting the population target.
  3. Note the stage and weeks. A screenshot or short note helps distinguish a normal same-stage reset from losing completed stages.
  4. Read the exit warning. A player specifically reports a milestone-saving warning after pressing Esc. Follow the wording in your current build before returning to the title screen.
  5. Check the title screen. If Continue is absent, preserve that observation rather than assuming it saved correctly or starting a replacement run as a repair.

This reduces ambiguity; it does not guarantee a bug-free save. If your version’s warning differs from the reports, follow the current warning. For time planning, see run length and longer Endless sessions.

Report a missing run without guessing a fix

TruthinessInc’s August 28 report concerns Continue disappearing despite exiting after a milestone warning. Later, IodizedSalt reports returning to Metropolis I after reaching IV; the replies distinguish that from resuming the current unfinished milestone. These are different symptoms and should not be collapsed into “saving never works.”

  • Game version and the date of the affected run.
  • Last fully completed milestone, current stage at exit, and stage after Continue.
  • Whether you had left the shop and the exact exit-warning text.
  • Whether Continue existed on the title screen and whether the problem repeats.
  • A screenshot or recording of the transition, if available.

Use the existing Steam report to compare symptoms. This guide does not recommend deleting saves, guessing file paths, toggling cloud settings or reinstalling as a cure: the source does not verify those recovery steps. No current fix is established by that discussion.

For choosing whether to advance before taking a break, read milestones, weeks and ending early.

Saving and quitting questions

Does Combolands save every week?

Players in the cited full-release discussion describe milestone checkpoints rather than saving every placement. dontnormally says the checkpoint is at the start of a milestone after leaving the shop; TruthinessInc says quitting within a milestone returns to its beginning.

When should I quit a Combolands run?

The player-reported stopping point is after completing a milestone and leaving the shop for the next one. Read the game’s exit warning and note your stage before returning to the title screen. This is a precaution, not a guarantee against bugs.

Why did my Endless run return to an earlier stage?

Returning to the start of the same unfinished milestone matches the reported checkpoint behavior. Losing several completed stages or losing Continue entirely is a different reported problem; the thread does not provide a verified recovery method.

Can I recover a missing Combolands save?

The cited public discussion does not establish a reliable restore procedure. Preserve the version, last completed milestone, exit warning and any recording, then report the exact mismatch. Do not assume reinstalling or replacing save files will recover the run.

Sources & version

Steam: Not Saving Run in Endless? Reports August 28–September 11, read September 28, 2026. dontnormally (#1) describes the checkpoint; TruthinessInc (#2, #6, #8) distinguishes partial-milestone loss from abnormal loss; IodizedSalt (#5, #7) reports multiple lost stages.

These are player observations, not an official save specification or a verified fix. The reports do not name every game build; current behavior may differ. Check the warning in the version you are using.
