Combolands draft pool: why the same buildings keep appearing
The opening pool is deliberately small, according to full-release players. It expands through the early milestones. Unlocking a blueprint does not guarantee it appears in your starting hand. Build a working starter engine, leave support space and advance before spending rerolls on a late-game card.

Your opening hand is not the entire unlocked collection
Quizer asked this exact question on September 26: do advanced offers depend on milestones, earlier placements, or just luck? Imhotep points to an older starting-buildings discussion; Doombringer then describes the same milestone-based expansion. The two threads agree on the broad pattern, but the detailed counts come from the same player—not two independent measurements.
| Current stage | Reported offers | Useful decision |
|---|---|---|
| First milestone | A small, recurring set of core Guild buildings. | Give starter cards an immediate scoring job. |
| Second milestone | A wider Guild selection and some Neutral support. | Add support to the engine already paying out. |
| Later milestones | The broader eligible pool; players report rarer offers becoming easier to find. | Look for the missing payoff or trigger, without treating eligibility as a promised draw. |
Doombringer’s August account gives two buildings per Guild before the first milestone and five per Guild plus Well, Town Bell and Lamppost before the second. Those are attributed observations, not a current-build contract. The September reply corroborates the stage pattern without supplying fresh counts or exact rarity odds.
What to do when the hand keeps repeating
- Identify your milestone. Repeated offers in the opening phase fit the reported restricted pool. Read the target and weeks, not just your collection size.
- Choose an available scorer. Use the best usable starter rather than reserving the whole run for a rare later blueprint.
- Keep its support space open. DisasterIncarnate’s follow-up describes becoming unable to place the repeated cards because of range restrictions. Compare the placement preview before crowding the island.
- Reach the next milestone. The reported expansion is tied to progression, not a proven requirement to place a fixed number of copies.
- Reassess the new offers. Search for the role your engine lacks: a scorer, producer, multiplier or repeat trigger. The scoring checklist helps distinguish them.

The official island image illustrates why leaving usable space matters; it is not a screenshot of a particular draft pool.
Separate an unlock, an eligible offer and a guaranteed draw
A persistent unlock makes more content available across runs. A milestone-dependent pool determines what can be offered at the current stage. Random selection determines which eligible cards you actually see. Cap’n Darwin explicitly notes that unlocks also affect the available selection, while Imhotep says opening hands remain restricted even after later blueprints are unlocked.
That means “I unlocked it, but do not see it in my first hand” does not prove a bug. It also means “the later pool is open” does not guarantee that your next reroll will be the card you want. Neither discussion supplies an exact chance, a pity timer, or evidence that repeatedly placing one starter forces its upgrade to appear.
If a particular card never appears later
- Check that you actually completed its unlock, rather than only seeing it in another player’s run.
- Separate an unavailable Guild or blueprint from unlucky selection within an eligible pool.
- Do not use the early-pool explanation as a universal answer to later missing Neutral offers. A separate September Reddit report describes that symptom but has no reply establishing its cause.
- Record the Guild pair, milestone, version and missing card before reporting a repeatable problem.
For named building effects, use the buildings directory. For difficulty unlocks that look available but do not apply to a run, use the difficulty progression guide.
Building-offer questions
Why do I keep getting the same starting buildings in Combolands?
Full-release players describe a deliberately limited opening pool for your chosen Guilds. The pool expands as milestones advance. Repeated starter offers are not, by themselves, evidence that your unlocks were lost.
When does the Combolands draft pool expand?
Doombringer reports a very limited pool in milestone one, a wider pool in milestone two, and the full eligible pool after that. The September 26 discussion repeats the earlier August 31 account. This is a player-reported stage rule, not a published probability table.
Will unlocking a building make it appear at the start of every run?
No guaranteed opening offer is established. Players distinguish persistent unlock eligibility from the restricted early-run pool; advancing to a later milestone still matters, and an eligible card is not a guaranteed draw.
Should I reroll until I get a late-game building?
Not while you are still in the limited starter phase. Build a scoring foundation with the available cards and advance. Later, reroll for a specific missing role rather than assuming every unlocked building is equally likely.
